Donald M. Lerch, 81, of Springfield, died at 3:12 p.m. on Tuesday, November 29, 2011, at St. John's Hospice.
Donald was born on November 2, 1930, in Terre Haute, IN, the son of John E. and Faye Pratt Lerch. He married Carol Cook on August 5, 1953, and she preceded him in death in 1988. He was also preceded in death by his parents and two sons, David and Paul Lerch.
Donald graduated from Mt. Vernon High School and earned his Master's Degree in Industrial Education from SIU Carbondale. He served his country in the United States Army, being stationed in Böblingen, Germany. Don's career was with the Illinois Department of Transportation, where he worked as a draftsman and surveyor, training coordinator, and traffic safety specialist. He was a member of Woodside Methodist Church, where he served as an usher. Donald was also a past president of the American Society of Training and Development (ASTD). He enjoyed traveling to Arizona every year and spending time with his family.
He is survived by his two daughters, Donna (Patrick Foster) Lerch and Nancy Stubblefield, both of Springfield; dear friend of 20 years, Alice Marietta of Paris, IL; nine grandchildren: Michael (Lisa Gonzalez) Lerch, Darcie (Sean) Hannah, Dawn Dili, Jennifer (Eric) Miller, Rachel Foster, Stuart Foster, Elizabeth Lerch, Andrew Lerch, and Mason Stubblefield; and seven great-grandchildren: Graham Lerch, Chase Hanson, Juliet Hannah, Elaine Dili, Jonathon Miller, Raymond Miller, and Lucy Miller. Don also treasured three daughters-in-law: Debbi Green Lerch, Dana Lerch Richards, and Chris Lerch.
Cremation will be accorded by Butler Cremation Tribute Center.
Memorial Gathering: Family will receive friends from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, December 2, 2011 at Kirlin-Egan and Butler Funeral Home, 900 S. 6th Street, Springfield.
Burial will be held at a later date at Opdyke Cemetery.
