Stewart “Stu” O. Alexander, 81, of Springfield, died at 5:40 a.m. on Tuesday, July 19, 2005 at his home.
Stu was born May 26, 1924 in Ft. Dodge, IA, the son of John A. and Leona Johnson Alexander. He married Barbara Purchase; she preceded him in death. He later married Lucinda Tolan on February 14, 1969 in Peoria, IL
Mr. Alexander was veteran of the U.S. Navy serving during the Korean War. He was a member of American Legion Post #32. He was employed as a hot tar roofer and construction worker. He was also employed by Lincoln Yellow Cab Company for twenty years as a taxi cab driver and had been employed by the Springfield School District as a school crossing guard for fourteen years.
He was a professional fighter for twenty years winning the Golden Glove Championship seven times worldwide in the welterweight class and an overall professional record of 46 wins and 5 losses. He fought over five hundred amateur fights.
He was also preceded in death by one son: Ronnie Joseph; one grandson: Morgan Willis Welch; two brothers: Richard and Joe; four sisters: Leona, Iona, Virginia and Marcella.
He is survived by his wife: Lucinda Alexander of Springfield; two daughters: Judy Ann (husband, Bill) Muse of East Moline, Mary Ann (husband, Shane) LaRocca of Williamsville; three sons: James S. (wife, Cynthia) Wiborg of Rock Island, Stewart Alexander, Jr. of Springfield, Ronald Joseph (wife, Desiree) Alexander of Springfield; twelve grandchildren: Robert S. Guthrie, Jacqueline Lytton, Lana Lee, Daniel Lee and Larry B. Tate, Chelsea, Ryan, Tristan and Chance Alexander, Chastity Alexander, Jessica Joan Grafton, Anthony Joseph LaRocca; three great grandchildren: Michael Lytton, Brice Andrew Johnson and Morgan Douglas Youngs; one sister: Dorothy Mock of Bloomington; five brothers: James Alexander, Jr. of Eureka, Floyd (wife, Norma Jean) Alexander of Creve Couer, Bobby, Danny and Mike Alexander all of Washington, IL and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Family will receive friends from 10:30-11:30 a.m., Monday August 1, 2005 at Kirlin-Egan and Butler Funeral Home, 900 S. 6th St. Springfield. Graveside Services will be held at 12:00 noon, Monday, August 1, 2005 at Camp Butler National Cemetery with Scott Brindley officiating. The Interveterans Burial Detail of Sangamon County will conduct military honors.
